Flooding in Nasarawa State kills two and submerges 18 communities

Severe flooding in the Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State has resulted in at least two deaths and the submergence of more than 18 communities. The disaster, caused by heavy rainfall and the overflow of the River Benue, has destroyed homes, buildings, and vast tracts of farmland, displacing thousands of residents.

Affected villages include Kwatan Bala, Olegokeme, Obendo, Achepe, Olegokpa, Ijiwo, Olegabgulu, Otiya-Gekye, Otiya-Giso, Odagede, Anagoga, and Otariga. Many displaced residents have sought refuge in higher-ground areas such as Agyema, Agbachi, and Rukubi. The destruction of crops nearing harvest has created immediate food security concerns and threatened the livelihoods of agricultural workers.

Nasarawa State officials have directed emergency management agencies to assess the damage and arrange for relief materials. Authorities have warned residents against returning to flood-prone areas, citing concerns regarding a potential water release from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon.
