Flooding in Nigeria causes death and property damage
Heavy rainfall has triggered severe flooding across parts of Nigeria, resulting in fatalities and significant property damage in Ekiti and Ondo States.
In Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, a 35-year-old man identified as Ibrahim Mandella drowned after being swept away by floodwaters while attempting to cross a narrow bridge in the Adehun area. Additionally, two commercial motorcyclists were reported missing after being swept away by the Elemi River. Flooding was also observed near the Ayemi Garage Bridge along the Ekiti State University Road.
In Akure, the capital of Ondo State, torrential rains caused flooding and erosion that swept away motorcycles and left residents stranded. The Oke Aro axis was among the most heavily impacted areas. Residents have attributed the severity of the flooding to blocked drainage channels and ongoing construction on the Akure-Idanre Road, calling for urgent government intervention to improve drainage infrastructure and expedite roadworks.
