Flooding threatens thousands of schools and communities in Nigeria
Flooding continues to pose a significant threat across Nigeria, with the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA) warning that approximately 4,500 schools and 8,000 communities across 15 states are at risk. The potential impact includes the destruction of educational infrastructure, loss of learning materials, and displacement of families, which could lead to significant learning loss and increased inequality.
In Anambra State, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has urged residents to prioritize safety, particularly motorists and parents, as water levels rise. NEMA officials reported a recent incident in Nibo where school children were trapped in a bus due to flooded roads. Authorities have advised riverine communities to remain vigilant and prepared to relocate to higher ground as water levels on the River Niger continue to rise.
Local emergency coordinators noted that rising waters are already submerging farmlands, forcing some farmers to begin early harvests. Both state and federal government officials are being called upon to arrange evacuations for residents in vulnerable areas.
