Kosovo mourns passing of activist and pediatrician Flora Brovina

Kosovo mourns the passing of Dr. Flora Brovina, a prominent pediatrician, poet, and human rights activist, who died at the age of 76. Brovina was a significant figure in Kosovo's struggle for independence, having founded the League of Albanian Women in 1992 to advocate for women's and children's rights.

During the Kosovo War, Brovina served as a medical professional within the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) structures. In 1999, she was arrested by Serbian authorities and sentenced to 12 years in prison for alleged terrorist activities. She was eventually released in November 2000 following significant international pressure from organizations such as Amnesty International and the European Parliament.

Following the war, she remained active in public life as a member of the Assembly of Kosovo for the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) and was a signatory of the Declaration of Independence. Leaders, including Prime Minister Albin Kurti and Acting President Albulena Haxhiu, have praised her lifelong dedication to humanitarianism, medicine, and the nation's sovereignty.
