Florence artisanal heritage showcased through design and historic workshops

Florence continues to sustain its legacy of high-end craftsmanship through specialized workshops and cultural exhibitions. The 32nd edition of Artigianato e Palazzo will take place from September 11 to 13 at the Giardino Corsini. The event features 100 artisans and young designers, highlighted by a site-specific installation titled ‘Linfa. La filosofia dello stupore’ by designer Jonathan Bocca. This immersive work integrates with the palace and garden, creating a dialogue between historical Roman statues and contemporary organic forms.

The city’s artisanal sector remains a vital supply chain for luxury interior design, utilizing historic institutions such as the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, established in 1588, and the Antico Setificio Fiorentino, which has produced silk since 1786. Despite the importance of these skills, the Florence Chamber of Commerce reported a 4.3% decline in artisanal businesses within the province for 2025. Local workshops, including the Scuola del Cuoio, continue to provide specialized materials and techniques for high-profile projects, such as the restyling of The James hotel.
