Florence begins construction of Leopolda‑Piagge tram line

A ceremony in the Piagge district marked the official start of works on a new 6.4 km tram line linking the Leopolda railway station with the Piagge neighbourhood in Florence. Mayor Sara Funaro and Tuscany President Eugenio Giani attended; Funaro called it “an important day” for residents who have awaited the connection.

The line will feature 13 stops, a 21‑minute end‑to‑end travel time and is scheduled for completion in about 802 days (roughly two and a half years). The project’s total cost is estimated at €202 million, financed by the municipality, the state, RFI and EU “Sblocca Italia” funds. Plans also include a future extension toward Campi Bisenzio and a parallel study for a Florence‑Prato tram link.
