Florence Court dismisses case regarding disappearance of Peruvian child Kata

A judge in Florence has ordered the dismissal of criminal proceedings involving the disappearance of Mia Kataleya Chicllo Alvarez, a Peruvian child known as Kata. The child vanished from the former Hotel Astor in Florence on June 10, 2023.

The investigation initially targeted Kata's maternal uncle, Argenis Abel Alvarez Vasquez, and paternal uncle, Marlon Edgar Chicllo Romero, on suspicion of kidnapping for extortion. However, the judge for preliminary investigations granted the prosecutor's request to archive the case, stating that the evidence collected does not allow for a reasonable prediction of conviction.

According to court president Angelo Antonio Pezzuti, while extensive investigative activities were conducted, they failed to reconstruct the circumstances of the child's disappearance with sufficient certainty or provide specific evidence to implicate the suspects. The decree notes that under Article 414 of the code of criminal procedure, the investigation may be reopened if the Public Prosecutor identifies new investigative needs or evidence.
