Florence cultural landmarks: Uffizi Gallery and Museo Galileo

Florence hosts several significant cultural landmarks, including the Gallerie degli Uffizi and the Museo Galileo. The Uffizi Gallery is housed in a 16th-century Renaissance complex commissioned by Cosimo I. de’ Medici. Originally designed by Giorgio Vasari to serve as administrative offices (uffici) for the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, the U-shaped building was later adapted to house the Medici family's expanding art collection, featuring works from the Middle Ages to the early modern period.

Nearby, the Museo Galileo focuses on the history of science and the discoveries of astronomer Galileo Galilei. The museum holds a unique relic: the middle finger of Galileo Galilei. According to tradition, the finger was removed on March 12, 1737, by Anton Francesco Gori during the transfer of the scientist's remains to the Basilica of Santa Croce. The finger was kept by admirers as a relic before eventually becoming a museum exhibit.
