Florence Goldsmithing Style advances toward EU protection

The Consorzio Stile Orafo Fiorentino has cleared a major hurdle in its bid to obtain European Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status. The Italian Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy has approved the application, moving the process from the national stage to the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) for final evaluation.

This decision makes the Florentine goldsmithing style one of the first nine Italian artisanal and industrial products to pass the national phase of this protection procedure. The initiative aims to safeguard centuries-old techniques, aesthetic characteristics, and craftsmanship skills that have evolved from medieval and Renaissance workshops to contemporary production.

The Consorzio, established two years ago, currently represents 43 entities, including jewelry workshops, retailers, and specialized schools. The movement seeks to protect the authenticity of local production and provide businesses with a tool to distinguish their work in international markets. In the Florence Metropolitan City, the sector remains economically significant, with 481 active enterprises, 276 of which are specifically involved in gold production and processing.
