Florence inaugurates Mandela Garden urban regeneration project
A new urban space named ‘Giardino Mandela’ has been inaugurated in Piazza Leopoldo, Florence. The project, an urban regeneration initiative costing approximately 3.2 million euros, was entirely designed and funded by Unicoop Firenze in collaboration with the municipal administration.
The revitalized area, historically known as ‘Terza Piazza,’ now features green spaces, an inclusive playground, a calisthenics gym, and wellness paths. The intervention addressed previous structural issues, such as dark corners and perimeter walls, and resolved long-standing water infiltration problems in the underground parking lot.
Florence Mayor Sara Funaro described the project as a significant investment in the neighborhood's social fabric. The space is located beneath a large mural created in 2018 to commemorate the centenary of Nelson Mandela's birth. The inauguration included musical performances of South African, Italian, and European Union anthems.
