Florence Leather Warehouse Fire Limited to Nearby Areas, Arpat Confirms No Health Risk

On July 28 a fire erupted in a roughly 5,000 m² leather‑goods warehouse on via Pratese in Florence. The blaze generated a dense black smoke plume that initially rose vertically before being carried by the prevailing wind.

A joint technical assessment by the Regional Agency for Environmental Protection (Arpat) and the ASL Toscana Centro concluded that the rapid rise of the smoke limited ground deposition to within about 300 m of the site. The nearest cultivated fields lie roughly 700 m away, so no specific health risk to the public or to food crops was identified, and no precautionary agricultural orders or environmental sampling were deemed necessary. As a precaution, the agencies advised avoiding outdoor exposure in areas reached by the plume and temporarily switching off mechanical ventilation systems drawing outdoor air.
