Florence Montedomini housing controversy fuels political feud
Former prime minister and ex‑Florence mayor Matteo Renzi has publicly condemned the current administration of Mayor Dario Nardella over the management of the Montedomini public‑housing assets. In a column he said the 2015 and 2018 council resolutions that allowed private leasing “opened the door to huge private profit” and urged mayor‑elect Sara Funaro to clean up the affair and hold those responsible to account. Renzi also lambasted the appointment of Luigi Paccosi to head Casa Spa as a “poor message to citizens”.
The CGIL and Sunia trade unions in Florence seized on the issue to press for a comprehensive public‑housing plan. They argue that the ASP Montedomini estate should be used for social housing, call for a city‑wide housing inventory, and demand the creation of a metropolitan housing agency to boost affordable homes, citing the unresolved “Quinte” case as an example of missed opportunity.
