Florence's Ponte al Pino reconstruction halts rail traffic, pedestrian path reopens

The historic Ponte al Pino bridge in Florence is being replaced, prompting the suspension of rail traffic between Campo di Marte and Santa Maria Novella stations. The first phase began on 10 July, with a temporary halt of services and the provision of shuttle buses for commuters. A pedestrian footbridge was reopened ahead of schedule to aid local mobility, and a second, longer interruption is planned from 26 July to 30 July for the installation of the new bridge deck.

Engineers stress that the disruptions are necessary to meet modern safety standards for this century‑old structure, which serves a strategic role in both regional and national rail networks. High‑speed trains on the Rome‑Milan corridor are experiencing delays of up to two and a half hours, with passengers required to transfer at Florence stations via shuttle services. RFI, municipal authorities and local police are coordinating the works and passenger assistance.

Despite the inconveniences, officials highlight the long‑term benefits of improved safety, reliability and capacity across the Italian railway system.
