Flores, Indonesia experiences over 23,000 aftershocks since August earthquake
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has recorded 23,159 aftershocks in the Flores region of East Nusa Tenggara since a major 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck on August 15, 2026. The most recent activity included a 4.9 magnitude shallow earthquake on October 26, centered approximately 30 kilometers northeast of Mbay, Nagekeo Regency.
While the recent tremors did not pose a tsunami threat, they were felt in Ngada, Sikka, and Manggarai regencies. The seismic activity is attributed to the Flores Back-Arc Thrust. The largest aftershock recorded during this period reached a magnitude of 6.2.
Local reports indicate that the humanitarian situation remains critical. Two months after the initial quake, residents in East Nusa Tenggara continue to live in emergency conditions, facing challenges related to inadequate shelter and slow recovery efforts from the central government.
