Flores Island livestock exports face maritime transport failures
The Socialist Party of the Azores (PS/Açores) has expressed deep concern regarding failures in the maritime transport system for live livestock exports from Flores Island. The party reports that livestock containers are failing to leave the island in time to connect with ships traveling between Ponta Delgada and Lisbon.
This logistical issue is occurring during the peak export season, which the party describes as a critical period for the agricultural sector. The delays are expected to create a cumulative effect, as missed shipments will increase the demand for subsequent trips, leading to an accumulation of livestock held on the island.
The PS/Açores notes that these operational limitations at the Port of Lajes das Flores are exacerbated by seasonal maritime conditions. They claim the situation has become recurrent and predictable, causing significant financial losses for farmers and threatening the economic sustainability of many local farms. The party criticized the Regional Government for failing to implement a previously approved legislative recommendation to increase maritime frequency and establish weekly trips during high-demand periods.
