Flores island population retention measures proposed by BE/Açores
António Lima, leader of BE/Açores, has proposed several measures to encourage population retention on the island of Flores. Following a meeting with the Flores Island Council in Santa Cruz das Flores, Lima emphasized that the island's future sustainability depends on attracting and fixing residents through improved access to essential services.
Key proposals include enhancing health and education services, specifically through incentives for healthcare professionals and financial support for relocated teachers to cover housing and commuting costs. To address housing, the party advocates for a significant increase in public housing stock and the regulation of the local lodging market to stabilize prices and convert properties into affordable rentals.
Additionally, Lima addressed maritime transport concerns, arguing that the island should not be dependent on a single private company without competition. He called on the Azores Government to allow Atlânticoline to participate in future public tenders for goods supply to ensure fairer pricing and better service through competition.
