Florianópolis installs button‑activated crossing on Rua Deputado Antônio Edu Vieira

The Florianópolis municipal government began installing a new button‑activated traffic‑light system on Rua Deputado Antônio Edu Vieira in the Pantanal district. The upgrade integrates a secondary signal ahead of the existing light, allowing pedestrians to trigger a stop for vehicles and improve safety near the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) campus. The city says the measure follows a history of accidents at the site and will complement future BRT infrastructure.

At the same time, more than 2,000 residents, students and staff from UFSC submitted a petition demanding additional safety actions, such as an elevated crosswalk or speed‑control measures, after several recent vehicle‑pedestrian collisions. The petition highlights ongoing concerns about high vehicle speeds, insufficient lighting and the lack of speed‑limit signage on the avenue.
