Florianópolis opens first public wood collection at Botanical Garden
The city of Florianópolis is inaugurating its first public xiloteca, a scientific wood collection, at the Jardim Botânico in Itacorubi. The initiative, led by the Secretariat of Environment and Sustainable Development, features over 200 pieces representing more than 100 species of native and exotic trees.
Similar to a library for books, a xiloteca serves as a cataloged collection of wood samples that record specific characteristics of a species, its origin, and the environmental conditions under which the tree grew. The collection is intended to support scientific research, species identification, teaching, and environmental education, specifically documenting the diversity of wood in Santa Catarina.
Dr. Zenório Piana, president of the Florianópolis Botanical Garden Association, noted that the transfer of the collection ensures the preservation of the material and expands its role in scientific dissemination. The exhibition is free to the public and open Tuesday through Sunday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
