Florida Amendment 3 faces electioneering accusations and budget warnings

Florida's Amendment 3, a proposed constitutional amendment to expand property tax exemptions, is facing legal and political scrutiny. State Representative Berny Jacques has accused the City of Largo of violating electioneering laws by hosting a municipal town hall that features only a single guest speaker, Jeff Brandes, who opposes the measure. Jacques argues that by using public funds to host a panel consisting of municipal employees and one opponent, the city is failing to provide a balanced discussion and is effectively taking an official stance against the initiative.

Simultaneously, the organization 1000 Friends of Florida has reaffirmed its opposition to the amendment. While a Leon County court recently ordered the state to rewrite the amendment's ballot title and summary due to misleading language, the group maintains that the substance of the measure remains unchanged. They cite projections from state economists suggesting the amendment could reduce local budgets by approximately $5 billion in its first year and nearly $12 billion annually by 2031, potentially impacting public safety, infrastructure, and community services.
