Florida Amendment 3 faces uphill battle in property tax poll

Florida voters will decide on Amendment 3 during the November 3, 2026, General Election. The proposed constitutional amendment seeks to increase the homestead exemption for non-school property taxes. If passed, qualifying homeowners could receive an exemption of up to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 in 2028, with future adjustments based on inflation. The amendment also aims to lower the cap on assessed-value increases for certain non-homestead properties.

A recent St. Pete Polls survey indicates the amendment is currently struggling to reach the 60% approval threshold required for passage in Florida. The poll found 45% support among likely voters, 30% opposition, and 25% undecided.

Opposition to the measure comes from groups including the Florida Sheriffs Association and the Florida Professional Firefighters, who argue the resulting revenue cuts—estimated at $12 billion once fully phased in—could jeopardize public safety funding and create financial instability for smaller municipalities. Governor Ron DeSantis has expressed support for the amendment, suggesting that local governments have sufficient budgetary flexibility to manage the changes.
