Florida implements independent terrorist designation process

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and his cabinet have approved a new regulation allowing the state to independently designate terrorist organizations, separate from federal government lists. Under this process, the state's head of Homeland Security will submit written proposals, and designated groups will have a seven-day window to file objections. Once sanctioned by the cabinet, designations will be published in the state's administrative register and take effect after 30 days. Attorney General James Uthmeier stated the rule provides a framework to name groups, cut off taxpayer support, and hold financiers accountable.

In related enforcement news, DeSantis noted that Florida state and local law enforcement officers account for nearly half of all immigration-related arrests in the United States. He contrasted Florida's aggressive enforcement stance with 'sanctuary states' like California and New York.

Additionally, new vehicle registration rules under law SB 488 will take effect in October. Individual applicants must provide proof of residential address via a valid Real ID, a U.S. passport, or a foreign passport accompanied by an I-94 form. The law also raises the threshold for mandatory reporting of traffic accidents with property damage from $500 to $2,000.
