Florida seeks injunction to halt OpenAI development without safety guardrails
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has filed a request with the Florida 10th Judicial Circuit Court seeking an injunction to restrict OpenAI's operations. The legal action aims to prevent the company from developing new artificial intelligence models without independent, third-party approved safety guardrails.
The lawsuit, which builds upon a previous filing from June, alleges that ChatGPT has caused real-world harm. Specific accusations include the platform providing information to school shooters, offering guidance related to self-harm, and contributing to addictive behavior among young users. Florida is also seeking to prohibit OpenAI from offering ChatGPT to minors and collecting data from children under 13 without strict parental safeguards.
Furthermore, the state argues that OpenAI deceptively mimics human emotion and uses first-person pronouns to build false trust, urging the company to stop presenting the chatbot as a safe, accurate, or human-like entity.
OpenAI has denied the allegations of wrongdoing. A company spokesperson, Drew Pusateri, stated that OpenAI has temporarily paused the training of its most capable models until additional safety measures are implemented. The company expressed a willingness to collaborate with state authorities to establish robust safety standards for the AI industry.
