Florida authorities enforce laws against left-lane hogging

Law enforcement in Florida, United States, has launched a campaign to penalize drivers who remain in the left lane for extended periods without overtaking. Under Florida Statute 316.081, on roads with two or more lanes in one direction, drivers are prohibited from staying in the leftmost lane if they know, or should reasonably know, that a faster vehicle is approaching from behind to pass.

Exceptions to this rule include vehicles actively overtaking others or those preparing to turn left. Authorities note that occupying the passing lane unnecessarily can disrupt traffic flow, leading to aggressive maneuvers or sudden braking by other motorists. Federal highway research indicates that accidents increase when vehicle speeds deviate significantly from the surrounding traffic flow, whether too fast or too slow.

In addition to lane discipline, Florida maintains strict speeding enforcement. Under the ‘Super Speeder’ rule, drivers traveling at 80 km/h (approximately 50 mph) or more above the posted speed limit may face criminal penalties.
