Florida reports first dengue fever death amid rising local cases

Florida health officials have confirmed the state’s first dengue fever death of the year, involving an 80-year-old woman from Tampa who passed away on September 4. The fatality occurred in Hillsborough County, which has emerged as the primary hotspot for the mosquito-borne illness.

Statewide, dengue cases have seen a significant surge. Reports indicate that total cases have surpassed 300, with 152 cases identified as locally acquired. This represents a substantial increase compared to previous years. Hillsborough County alone accounts for 134 of these local infections. Other affected areas include Miami-Dade, Orange, Palm Beach, Pasco, and Pinellas counties.

Dengue is transmitted to humans through the bites of infected Aedes species mosquitoes. While many infections result in mild symptoms such as fever, rash, and muscle pain, severe cases can lead to internal bleeding, shock, and death. Health officials are urging residents to use insect repellent and eliminate standing water to mitigate the spread.
