Florida congressional race focuses on tariffs and taxes

A congressional race in Florida’s 23rd district has become a focal point for debates over tariffs, taxation, and education. Following a new congressional map passed by the Florida legislature, the district will see new representation as incumbent Democrat Lois Frankel moves from the 22nd to the 23rd district.

Democratic candidate Pia Dandiya, a high-school principal, is campaigning on a platform to end President Trump’s tariff policies, lower prescription drug costs, and increase housing availability. Dandiya has also criticized recent legislation for cuts to Medicaid and has proposed increasing taxes on corporations and billionaires to support federal welfare programs.

Republican candidate Casey Askar, a Marine veteran, is advocating for a Tax Limitation Balanced Budget Amendment to prevent lawmakers from increasing the federal deficit. Askar also expressed support for eliminating the federal gas tax to combat rising fuel prices.
