Florida Department of Health proposes repealing school vaccine mandates

The Florida Department of Health held a public hearing to discuss a proposal to repeal immunization requirements for four vaccines currently needed for school enrollment: hepatitis B, varicella (chickenpox), Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), and pneumococcal conjugate.

State Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo supports the move, arguing that it empowers parents to make active decisions regarding their children's health rather than simply following mandates. The proposal seeks to modify administrative rule 64D-3.046 so that the Department of Health cannot require vaccines that are not explicitly listed in Florida state statutes.

The hearing drew conflicting views. Advocates for parental rights and medical freedom praised the decision, while various doctors and healthcare professionals criticized the repeal. Governor Ron DeSantis has previously suggested that such mandates were established by executive agencies without direct legislative approval.
