El Niño preparedness launches in Uruguay, Argentina and Costa Rica

In Uruguay’s Florida department, mayor Carlos Enciso and emergency coordinator Cono Arrúa reviewed and updated protocols for possible El Niño impacts, coordinating police, army, health services, energy providers and municipal crews and urging residents to keep drainage channels clear.

In Argentina, Governor Juan Pablo Valdés inspected Curuzú Cuatiá to plan drainage upgrades ahead of the expected El Niño rains, deploying excavators, trucks and other equipment. Governor Elías Suárez later convened an expanded cabinet meeting to assess flood‑prevention works and other policies, explicitly linking them to the upcoming El Niño season.

Costa Rica’s Defensoría de los Habitantes asked the National Emergency Commission (CNE) for a detailed report on the state’s El Niño response plan, including water‑supply safeguards, measures for vulnerable communities, training for emergency committees and monitoring mechanisms.

Separately, municipal authorities in Mexico (Ocuituco, Morelos) and Chile (Maullín) held regional security coordination meetings, while Argentine officials introduced a community‑alarm system in San Luis and appointed a new health‑supervisor for the Valles Calchaquíes. A police operation in Luján, Argentina, resulted in the arrest of a suspect and recovery of stolen items.
