Florida energy demand rises amid heat advisory and hurricane preparedness

Duke Energy Florida has issued a summer heat advisory for its 2 million residential, commercial, and industrial customers as August temperatures peak. The utility noted that recent summers have run 10% to 15% above long-term averages, placing significant strain on the electric grid due to sustained high demand.

High humidity levels further impact energy consumption, as air conditioning units must dedicate approximately 30% of their output to dehumidification rather than cooling. To manage this seasonal pressure, the St. Petersburg-based utility is providing efficiency resources to help customers manage costs and usage.

Concurrently, Florida residents are increasingly adopting rooftop solar and home battery systems to mitigate risks associated with hurricane season. While Florida is the nation's third-largest solar producer, the potential for long-term outages during severe storms is driving interest in backup power to protect essential services like refrigeration and medical equipment.
