Florida executes man for 1976 murder of teenager

Harold Gene Lucas, 74, was executed by lethal injection on Tuesday at Florida State Prison, ending a 50-year legal process following the 1976 murder of 16-year-old Jill Piper. Lucas was pronounced dead at 6:18 p.m. after receiving a three-drug cocktail. When asked if he wished to make a final statement, he declined, stating, “No.”

The crime occurred in August 1976 in Bonita Springs. At the time, Lucas was 24 and had been an ex-boyfriend of the victim. Following a period of trespassing and threats, Lucas arrived at the Piper residence armed with a rifle and shot Jill Piper multiple times despite her pleas for her life. Two of her friends were also wounded during the attack but survived.

Lucas had been sentenced to death in 1977 and faced numerous appeals over the decades. He eventually waived further legal challenges, expressing fatigue with the prolonged proceedings. The execution was authorized by Governor Ron DeSantis and marks the 14th execution in Florida since the beginning of the year.
