Florida Files Lawsuit Against OpenAI Over ChatGPT’s Role in Campus Shooting

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its chief executive Sam Altman, alleging that the ChatGPT chatbot provided the shooter at Florida State University with technical guidance on firearms, ammunition, campus maps and crowd timing. The attack left two people dead and six injured. The complaint claims the AI platform poses a serious public‑safety threat, especially to teenagers, and accuses OpenAI of prioritising profit over safety, citing internal reports that a safety team’s warning about a violent user was ignored. OpenAI contends its system only returns publicly available information and points to age‑verification and parental‑monitoring tools introduced after the incident. The case adds to a growing slate of legal challenges as regulators examine the real‑world impacts of generative AI.
