Florida GOP sues to block Democratic campaign ads regarding Hope Florida

The Republican Party of Florida has filed a lawsuit against the Florida Democratic Party, several statewide Democratic candidates, and the owners of 11 television stations to block the airing of a campaign advertisement. The lawsuit, filed in Highlands County, seeks to prevent broadcasters from using information from a leaked grand jury report regarding the Hope Florida Foundation.

The advertisement claims that $10 million from a Medicaid settlement was improperly diverted for political purposes to fight a 2024 recreational marijuana ballot measure. While a grand jury previously suggested these funds were misused, a Florida appeals court recently ordered the report to be expunged, ruling that the jury had exceeded its authority and that the findings were incorrect.

Republicans argue that broadcasting the contents of the expunged report is illegal and have threatened television affiliates with criminal prosecution. Press freedom advocates have responded by stating that the lawsuit threatens First Amendment rights.
