Florida Governor DeSantis proposes restrictions on welfare benefit spending

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has announced a plan to restrict the use of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and EBT benefits to essential needs. Working in coordination with the Trump administration, the proposal aims to prevent the use of taxpayer-funded aid for non-essential or luxury items.

Under the proposed amendments to the state plan, recipients would be prohibited from using benefits for products and services including tobacco, vaping products, drugs, adult material, video games, theme park tickets, tattoos, tanning services, and fortune-telling. DeSantis stated the goal is to ensure assistance is directed toward necessities such as groceries, clothing, and medicine to help families achieve self-sufficiency.

The governor also noted that these restrictions are intended to combat fraud within the public assistance system. While the proposal changes how funds are spent, DeSantis indicated it would not reduce the total amount of assistance available to eligible families.
