Florida Governor Ron DeSantis withdraws death warrant for inmate

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has withdrawn a death warrant for William Lee Thompson, marking the first time he has called off an execution since taking office. Thompson, 74, was scheduled to be executed via lethal injection on October 13 for the 1976 murder and kidnapping of Sally Ivester.

While the Governor's office did not provide a specific reason for the withdrawal, Thompson's legal team had argued that he lacked the legal capacity to be executed due to advanced dementia.

The decision does not affect another scheduled execution on the same day. James Robertson, 63, is still set to be executed following his 2008 murder of a cellmate at the Charlotte Correctional Institution.
