Florida grand jury finds DeSantis administration misappropriated $10 million

A Leon County grand jury concluded that the administration of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis misappropriated $10 million in taxpayer funds. The money, which originated from a settlement with Centene—the state's largest Medicaid contractor—was intended to recover overpayments made to the Florida Healthy Kids program, which provides medical coverage for low-income children.

Instead, the grand jury found that the funds were diverted to Hope Florida, a charity founded by First Lady Casey DeSantis, and subsequently used by political action committees to campaign against the legalization of marijuana in Florida. The report described the movement of money as part of a ‘sophisticated scheme to finance political activities.’

Despite these findings, the grand jury declined to recommend criminal charges, stating that ‘no one will take responsibility for having decided that the $10 million of taxpayer money would go to Hope Florida... nor did anyone remember who did it.’ Governor DeSantis has not questioned the legitimacy of the report but maintained that no laws were broken, while also suggesting that those responsible for leaking the sealed documents would face consequences.
