Florida health officials warn of medical shortages and dengue risks

Health authorities in Florida are addressing critical challenges regarding medical infrastructure and disease control. The Florida Departmental Board's Health and Environment Commission has raised alarms regarding significant deficiencies in the Integrated Health System. Key issues include a shortage of medical specialists, specifically anesthesiologists and plastic surgeons, and a limited number of oncologists and urologists available for the entire department.

Infrastructure concerns include inadequate laparoscopic equipment, issues with autoclaves, and insufficient resources in operating rooms, intensive care units, and intermediate care areas. These shortages have led to the suspension of scheduled surgeries. Additionally, the commission highlighted needs for improved mental health services and better access to medications.

Simultaneously, health officials are responding to an increase in dengue fever cases. In Collier County, the Department of Health and the Mosquito Control District have intensified surveillance and fumigation efforts to combat the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Measures include aerial and ground spraying, weekly trap monitoring, and inspections of residential areas to treat standing water with biological larvicides.
