Florida Highway Patrol arrests driver after illegal street takeover shuts down I‑75 near Tampa

Over 100 vehicles blocked the northbound lanes of Interstate 75 near Tampa, Florida, at about 1:30 a.m. on August 3, 2026, in an illegal street takeover. Drivers performed burnouts, bringing the highway to a complete standstill.

Florida Highway Patrol intervened, the crowd dispersed, and a green BMW driven by 25‑year‑old Yulian Lugo accelerated to roughly 140 mph before being stopped in a parking lot. Lugo was arrested on felony aggravated fleeing and participation in a street takeover; his three passengers (ages 24, 18 and 18) were charged with misdemeanor highway racing. All four were booked into the Hillsborough County Jail. No injuries were reported.
