Florida highway takeover on I-75 triggers 140 mph police chase

Early Saturday morning, hundreds of vehicles blocked the northbound lanes of Interstate 75 near mile marker 266 in Thonotosassa, Hillsborough County, Florida. Drivers performed burnouts and other stunts, causing a full shutdown of traffic. Florida Highway Patrol troopers responded; most participants were allowed to leave, but a green BMW driven by 25‑year‑old Yulian Lugo accelerated to about 140 mph, prompting a high‑speed pursuit that ended in a parking lot.

Lugo was arrested and charged with aggravated fleeing to elude and participating in a street takeover, both felonies. Three passengers—a 24‑year‑old and two 18‑year‑olds—were also taken into custody on misdemeanor highway‑racing charges. All four were booked into the Hillsborough County Jail. Street takeovers, where crowds gather to watch reckless driving stunts, have become a focus for law‑enforcement agencies across the United States due to the safety risks they pose.
