Florida holds primaries for Senate seat and legislative contests

Florida voters participated in primary elections on Tuesday to select candidates for the November general elections, including a special Senate race to fill the term left by Marco Rubio after his appointment as Secretary of State.

In the Democratic Senate primary, Angie Nixon secured a victory over Alexander Vindman, a former military officer and key witness in Donald Trump’s first impeachment. On the Republican side, interim Senator Ashley Moody is a leading candidate. The race for the governorship also saw activity, with Byron Donalds noted as a prominent figure seeking to succeed Ron DeSantis.

The elections take place against a backdrop of significant redistricting. A new electoral map approved by the state legislature is expected to favor Republicans, potentially increasing their House delegation from 20 to 24 seats. Democrats view these primaries as a critical opportunity to regain ground, as they require only three more seats nationally to reclaim the House majority.

Internal tensions were evident across both parties. Republican contests featured candidates with polarizing views on Israel and various ideological fractures, while Democratic primaries highlighted divides between the party's progressive wing and its establishment, particularly regarding foreign policy and representation.
