Florida immigration enforcement agreements spark economic and political tension

Immigration enforcement through 287(g) agreements is creating economic and political tension in Florida. In Walton County, increased cooperation between local police and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is impacting the construction and tourism sectors, which rely heavily on immigrant labor. Reports indicate that the fear of deportation has led many undocumented workers to limit their daily activities, potentially affecting local economies.

In Miami, Mayor Eileen Higgins is facing political pressure to terminate a similar agreement approved in June 2025. The Florida Immigrant Coalition has launched a public campaign, including advertisements in Little Havana and near I-95, to urge the city to end the cooperation. Additionally, State Representative Angie Nixon has called on the Mayor and the City Commission to cancel the agreement, citing campaign promises made regarding immigrant safety.
