Florida implements mandatory communism history curriculum in public schools

Florida public schools have begun implementing Senate Bill 1264, a law mandating age-appropriate instruction regarding the history, atrocities, and threats of communism. The curriculum covers grades K-12 and includes topics such as communist movements in the United States, Mao Zedong’s Cultural Revolution, and the history of communism in Cuba and Latin America.

Governor Ron DeSantis signed the legislation to ensure students receive an account of the political repression, economic ruin, and loss of liberty associated with communist regimes. Education officials stated the goal is to provide a foundation of historical facts before students reach higher education.

Implementation methods vary across school districts. In Orange, Osceola, Broward, Hillsborough, Escambia, and Duval counties, the material is being integrated into existing courses like history, civics, and economics rather than through standalone electives. The Florida Department of Education is currently developing an instructional guide to assist educators in teaching the standards for grades six through 12.
