Florida implements new legislative package effective October 1

A package of new laws is set to take effect in Florida on October 1, covering a wide range of regulatory, criminal, and social sectors.

Key provisions include SB 432, which strictly prohibits the retail sale of nitrous oxide in locations such as gas stations and tobacco shops to curb recreational misuse. In terms of animal welfare, HB 559 mandates psychological evaluations for minors involved in animal cruelty and imposes harsher penalties for adults who incite such acts.

New criminal justice measures include HB 1525, which establishes third-degree felonies for intentional sexual exposure or indecent acts performed in the presence of minors under 16. Violators could face up to five years in prison and $5,000 in fines. Additionally, HB 1293 targets real estate fraud by making it a felony to use false identities or falsified documents during the housing rental process.
