Florida implements new traffic reporting laws under SB 488

Florida has enacted new traffic regulations under Senate Bill 488, signed by Governor Ron DeSantis. The legislation updates the threshold for requiring police presence at the scene of a vehicle accident to reflect modern repair costs.

Starting October 1, 2026, drivers will only be required to report accidents to authorities if property damage exceeds $2,000. Previously, the law required reporting for any damage starting at $500. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) stated the measure aims to improve officer response times by allowing law enforcement to focus on more serious emergencies rather than minor fender benders.

Despite the increased threshold, police presence remains mandatory in specific circumstances, including accidents involving injuries or fatalities, suspected driving under the influence, reckless driving, or incidents involving disabled vehicles.
