Florida implements twelve new laws effective October 1

Florida is implementing a package of twelve new laws effective October 1. These legislative changes impact various sectors, including housing, vehicle registration, public safety, and animal welfare.

In the housing sector, HB 1293 establishes a third-degree felony for occupying rental properties using false identities, financial documents, or fraudulent identification. Landlords are granted the authority to issue a seven-day notice to recover properties in such cases.

Regarding vehicle regulations, SB 488 increases the threshold for mandatory accident reporting from $500 to $2,000. Additionally, new requirements for certain vehicle registrations include proof of legal presence and residency, accepting documents such as a REAL ID, a valid U.S. passport, or a foreign passport accompanied by an I-94 form. SB 246 also introduces eight new special license plate designs for educational and cultural institutions.

Public safety measures include HB 397, which penalizes the intentional violation of no-contact orders following arrests for violent crimes, and HB 429, which expands the criteria for identifying gang affiliations to include social media confessions and criminal slang. Furthermore, SB 432 prohibits licensed tobacco retailers from selling nitrous oxide and imposes strict penalties for the trafficking of xilazine.
