Florida implements urban design strategies to combat sea level rise
Florida is implementing new architectural and urban design strategies to adapt to the increasing threats of sea level rise, extreme storms, and saltwater intrusion. As global temperatures rise due to fossil fuel emissions, coastal communities face heightened risks from tidal flooding and storm surges.
In Miami and Miami Beach, designers are working to integrate infrastructure with urban environments to create resilient residential buildings and parks. Jeffrey Huber, a landscape architect and professor at Florida Atlantic University, notes that the focus has shifted from attempting to stop water to learning how to live with and over it.
This adaptation comes as research indicates human-driven sea level rise is increasing the frequency of extreme coastal flooding worldwide. In the United States, approximately 129 million people, representing nearly 40% of the population, reside in coastal counties vulnerable to these climate impacts.
