Florida insurance landscape shifts with rate cuts and new cost-reduction proposal

Florida is seeing shifts in its property insurance landscape through both legislative proposals and approved rate reductions. Florida Insurance Commissioner Mike Yaworsky has approved rate decreases for four companies, impacting tens of thousands of policyholders. These include Alliance North America and Vyrd Insurance Company, both seeing a 10.4% decrease, Safe Harbor Insurance Company with a 4.1% reduction, and Unique Insurance Company with a 3.2% reduction.

In a separate development, politician Byron Donalds has introduced the ‘Bring Down The Bill’ plan to address affordability. The six-part package proposes increasing insurer transparency via a public ‘Insurer Scorecard,’ reforming hurricane-disaster financing through the Florida Hurricane Catastrophe Fund, and implementing binding arbitration to settle disputes more quickly. The plan also includes permitting reforms and building material reviews to mitigate rising construction costs.

According to S&P Global, Florida recorded a 0.92% insurance rate change in 2025, making it the only state in the nation with an overall rate decrease, while the national weighted average increase was 5.5%.
