Florida International University hosts AI 305 Conference

Florida International University (FIU) recently hosted its second annual AI 305 Conference, a sold-out event focused on the theme “AI for Good: Profit, Performance and Social Impact.” The conference brought together executives from major technology firms, including Microsoft, OpenAI, Google, Meta, and Amazon Web Services, to discuss the evolving role of artificial intelligence in sectors such as healthcare, transportation, and business.

Discussions at the event covered the rapid advancement of AI from simple chatbots to tools capable of simulating dynamic worlds and aiding scientific discovery. The program also highlighted developments in robotics, featuring humanoid robots designed for roles in hospitality, elder care, and medical offices to address staffing needs and reduce costs.

Parallel to these technological advancements, FIU’s Faculty Senate addressed academic implications of AI and curriculum changes. Faculty members expressed concerns regarding the future of general education courses, specifically following a Florida Board of Governors decision to reclassify Introduction to Sociology as an elective for the 2026-2027 academic year. Discussions also touched upon the potential impact of similar reclassifications on anthropology courses.
