Florida International University study finds mosquito species have unique scent preferences
Researchers at Florida International University have discovered that different mosquito species exhibit unique preferences when choosing human hosts based on individual body chemistry. A study involving 119 volunteers and published in the journal ‘iScience’ found that no single person was universally attractive to all tested species.
The study analyzed three disease-carrying species: ‘Aedes aegypti’, ‘Aedes albopictus’ (the Asian tiger mosquito), and ‘Culex quinquefasciatus’ (the southern house mosquito). These insects are responsible for transmitting illnesses such as yellow fever, dengue, Zika, and West Nile virus. Using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, researchers identified that each species responds to a distinct cocktail of volatile substances emitted from human skin.
Findings indicated that ‘Aedes aegypti’ showed a slight preference for men, while the other two species showed no sex-based bias. Lead researcher Kaylee Marrero noted that each species appears to use a distinctive microbial footprint as a signal. Neurogeneticist Matthew DeGennaro stated that isolating these specific scent components could lead to the development of new, species-specific repellents to combat vector-borne diseases.
