Florida International University Study Links Sleep Disorders to Brain Changes
Researchers at Florida International University examined 57 brain‑imaging studies and found that insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea are associated with reduced volume in the thalamus, a region that directs attention and supports cognitive control. Parasomnias such as sleepwalking and night terrors showed additional alterations in the posterior cingulate cortex, which helps regulate emotions and motivation. The findings, published in *Scientific Reports*, suggest that distinct sleep disorders may have characteristic neuroanatomical signatures, potentially aiding earlier diagnosis and the development of targeted therapies.
