Cuba faces UN vote on US blockade amid arrest warrant for Raúl Castro

The United Nations General Assembly is scheduled to debate and vote on a resolution to end the United States' economic, commercial, and financial blockade against Cuba on October 27 and 28. Cuban officials, including Prime Minister Manuel Marrero and Ambassador Ernesto Soberón, expressed confidence in international support, characterizing the US sanctions as a policy of collective punishment that causes significant humanitarian and economic damage.

Simultaneously, the Cuban government has condemned a state arrest warrant issued in Florida against Raúl Castro. The warrant, announced by Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, charges Castro with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder in connection with the 1996 shootdown of two unarmed civilian aircraft belonging to the Brothers to the Rescue organization. Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel and Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez described the legal action as a baseless political maneuver intended to justify the ongoing blockade.

International reactions have been mixed. While various organizations in Canada, Nicaragua, Uruguay, and Italy have called for solidarity with Cuba and the lifting of sanctions, US officials maintain that the legal actions against Castro are necessary for accountability regarding the 1996 incident.
