Florida judge faces backlash over cooking discussion with domestic violence suspect
Broward County Judge Allison Gilman is facing criticism following a bond hearing for Christopher Johnson, a man accused of domestic battery. During the proceedings, Gilman engaged in a detailed conversation with Johnson regarding his culinary skills.
Johnson, a chef at a Florida sports bar, was arrested after allegedly punching his ex-girlfriend and pulling her hair. During the hearing, Gilman asked Johnson what dish he would cook for her, leading to an exchange about grilling techniques for steak. The judge discussed her own difficulties with overcooking or burning meat, while Johnson demonstrated how to turn a steak using specific clock positions.
Gilman set Johnson’s bond at $1,500 and remarked that she would have to visit the establishment where he works. The interaction has drawn condemnation from domestic violence advocates, including Dr. Linda Parker, CEO of Women in Distress, who described the discussion as inappropriate given the nature of the charges.
